Featured Article: Making use of the Gene Expression Omnibus
Mark Minie, PhD, University of WashingtonSeptember 30th, 2005
The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) is an underappreciated and underutilized resource provided by NCBI. Many researchers are unaware of the many applications the database has for research, or do not have an understanding of how to best make use of it. Those who do use the system in their research have a very powerful tool as they seek to better understand gene expression.
GEO provides a curated online repository for several levels of high-throughput expression data, drawn from a wide range of experimental samples. GEO currently holds over 60,000 submissions from nearly 1,200 researchers, representing over half a billion individual molecular abundance measurements for over 100 organisms, drawn from samples using many different techniques, including DNA microarrays, SAGE, MPSS, proteomics mass spectroscopy and protein arrays.
